The word "chakra" literally means spinning wheel or disc and has its origins in the ancient Indic language called the Sanskrit.
There are 7 main chakras that run from the base of the spine to the top of our head. These form part of a subtle energy system and can be described as the place where our mind, body and spirit meet. An energetic canal connects the 7 chakras within our body and is referred to as the "Hara Line". Imagine it as a tube of energy that runs through the centre of the body extending beyond our feet and into the Earth so as to ground us, and reaching beyond the top of our head, connecting us with Universal energies. Each of these 7 energy centres is related to aspects of our physical, mental and spiritual selves, and also to our energetic body or aura.
The first 3 chakras are connected to the physical plane, and therefore our physical body. They are linked to the impulses, instincts and basic drivers of human nature. Chakras 4 and 5 are connected to the mental plane and are therefore non-physical in nature. They are linked to the beliefs and thoughts that ultimately drive our behaviours. The last 2 chakras are connected to the spiritual plane and facilitate our alignment to the underlying spiritual nature of our Universe.
The first chakra, the Root or Base Chakra, is located at the base of the spine and focuses on self preservation. The key themes related to this chakra are survival and basic physical needs. This chakra is associated with the colour red, our sense of smell and the element of Earth. Hematite is just one crystal which will facilitate the balancing & healing of the base chakra, while grounding us to the Earth's energy.
The second or Sacral Chakra, is located in the lower abdomen and focuses on self gratification. The key themes related to this chakra are balance, pleasure and creativity. This chakra is associated with the colour orange, our sense of taste and the Element of Water. Carnelian is a crystal which supports balancing & healing of the sacral chakra.
The third chakra, our Solar Plexus, is located just under the ribs and focuses on self-definition. The key themes related to this chakra are personal power and transformation. This chakra is associated with the colour yellow, our sense of sight and the element of Fire. Citrine is one crystal which will facilitate the balancing and healing of the solar plexus chakra.
The fourth chakra, the Heart Chakra, is located over the sternum, or heart and focuses on self-acceptance. The key themes related to this chakra are unconditional love and relationships. This chakra is associated with the colours green and pink, our sense of touch and the element of Air. Rose quartz has a gentle and loving energy and will facilitate the balancing and healing of the heart chakra.
The Throat chakra is the fifth chakra and focuses on self-expression. It is obviously located at the throat. The key themes related to this chakra are communication and personal expression. This chakra is associated with the colour light blue, our sense of sound and hearing and the element of Ether. Sodalite is a crystal which will facilitate the balancing and healing of the throat chakra.
The sixth chakra, known as the Third Eye, is located in the centre of the forehead and focuses on self-reflection. The key themes of this chakra are intuition, wisdom and insight. This chakra is associated with the colour indigo, our sixth sense or intuition and the element of Light or Spirit. An Amethyst crystal will support the balancing and healing of the third-eye chakra.
The seventh or Crown Chakra, is located at the top of the head and focuses on self-knowledge. The key themes of this chakra are Divine connection and spirituality. This chakra is associated with the colour violet and beyond the self to our Divine Source or connection. This source is sometimes referred to as The All or God (or so named according to your own personal belief). Crystal quartz is one crystal which will facilitate the balancing and healing of the crown chakra.
